Believing is to Be Living

In Luke it says, "Why do you call me lord, lord yet do not do what I say?" If you believe that God is your personal saviour and Lord, then why is it not being displayed in your way of life. According to Oxford dictionary, to believe is to accept that (something) is true. God exists and his word is presented to you. It is then up to you to accept what is in it and believe. If you do not believe something then you do not accept it as being true. There are a lot of theories in the world that you can decide to accept or deny. There are sayings/ideas for everything and it is our actions which convey if we really do believe in them.
Let’s use this COVID19 pandemic as an example. The words of the health officials say the virus can be contracted into our systems through the eyes, nose and mouth. Do you believe their word? Yes you do. How do I know? By your actions I can tell. As a result of you believing, you are staying inside; washing your hands like clockwork; wearing a mask in public; and being careful to keep your hands far away from your eyes, nose and mouth. What you accepted in your mind to be true drives the things that you do. Your actions reflect that which you believe, as mentioned in the verse from Luke quoted at the beginning. Jesus was basically asking, if you believe I am your Lord why don't you act the way you would with a Lord. A Lord is someone who has authority, control and power and you should respect and obey such person. That means things you say or do, will indicate that you believe such an idea. Your life will be depicting a state of belief through your "doings”. You believe that the virus way of entry is through your eyes, nose and mouth so you try your best to take all the necessary measures to prevent that from happening. What do we see here? Your belief resulted in corresponding actions.
It is the same thing that applies to believing in Jesus Christ. In John 3:16 it says "For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son so whosoever 'believe' in him will not perish but have everlasting life". Therefore you have to believe in Jesus to have everlasting life. This verse is therefore conveying that you have to accept this truth and live a life which also shows that you believe, in order to have everlasting life. Furthermore, the bible says in Hebrews "without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him". A word is presented here, which seems to be a lot familiar with the word “believe”. That word is faith, in Hebrews it says faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. To have faith is to hope but let’s not end it here; as there is more to faith than just hoping.
Faith comes hand in hand with something called "works". Works are actions, it is a way of life, it is the things you do; the things you say; to yourself, others and God. Works alone cannot save you, hoping alone cannot save you either. What do I mean? Hoping for things not seen; and not doing anything to convey that you are preparing for what you hope, will not truly be faith. Similarly, doing things and not having hope isn't evidence of faith. However, hope together with corresponding actions is evidence of true faith. When you hope and show that you are hoping that is the act of belief. If you see Jesus as your Lord then you will ensure to take the necessary actions to obey his every commandment. You will strive to live a life that is pleasing to him; not your friends, family or self as they are not your Lord, Jesus is. This is would be a representation of you showing that you do believe; this is the doing.
So the question is posed. What is the most popularly read scripture, John 3:16 really saying to us? It is saying whoever accepts the idea that "God sent his only son to atone for our sins" will have eternal life; but not only to accept it in your head but also to show it in your way of life that you do. Belief therefore does not end in the mind but it overflows to your mouth, hands and feet. It can be heard in your words; seen by the things you do and even evident in the very places you go while you can. In conclusion, to believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour is to be living the life that shows you do.
What you believe can be seen by how you be living! P E R I O D T T T T T ! ! ! ! !
